Hangzhou has a rich cultural past. It served as the ancient capital of the Southern Song Dynasty and was the birthplace of Liangzhu culture. It is also known for its ceramics, printing, silk, tea, food, Chinese medicine, religion, painting, calligraphy, and seal cutting art. Hangzhou, or “Paradise on Earth“ as Marco Polo described it, has been the home to many generations of designers and artists. In 2012, UNESCO listed Hangzhou as a “Craft and Folk Art City”.
